Wanderlust Fulfilled: Dunvegan Castle

Happy Friday!

I totally did not mean to take the week off blogging, but sometimes that is just what you need. I started the week off not feeling so great, and my body and mind decided I just needed the time to recuperate. This post was one I was just too excited about to miss though!

Today I’m taking you to Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. This particular castle was a must-see on our trip to Scotland, as it is also the clan seat for the MacLeod Clan (my maiden name)!  Dunvegan Castle is a great one to visit, not only for clan members but also because it is the longest inhabited castle in Scotland. It has been the home of the MacLeod chiefs for 800 years. You can find out more about it’s history here. The castle is still inhabited by the current chief, so photography inside the castle is not permitted. They do have some awesome artifacts on display though, including paintings of clan members, historical weaponry, a huge library, and of course the fairy flag (apparently I come by my fairy and book interests naturally). All of this is to say it was a pretty special day for me. The castle itself has several awesome gardens you can explore, as well as being situated on the cliffs above Loch Dunvegan giving some pretty spectacular views.

Dunvegan Castle was definitely a trip highlight, especially getting to sign the “secret” clan guest book. What have been some of your travel highlights? Is the Isle of Skye on your wanderlust list?

  1. …It wasn’t on my list before–but it certainly is now!!…It reminds me of Glendalough–the Valley of the Two Lakes–in Ireland, :-)…
